Summer is the perfect time to recharge and try something new—no matter your child’s age! Whether you have got energetic little ones or independent teens at home, there are plenty of ways to keep learning alive and spend quality time together. Sometimes we just need to down tools and have some fun together..
Some ideas for the younger children (but I bet the older ones will get involved!)
- Nature Scavenger Hunt: Explore local parks or your own garden with a checklist of things to find—flowers, bugs, leaves, or interesting rocks.
- Storytime Picnic: Pack books and snacks, then read together outdoors. Let kids pick the next adventure!
- Kitchen Science: Try simple experiments like baking soda volcanoes or growing cress on the windowsill.
- Creative Writing Circles: Start a story together, taking turns to add new twists or silly characters.
- Delicious Maths in the Kitchen: Turn baking into a lesson by letting kids help with weighing, measuring, and timing.
- Art Outdoors: Paint stones, make nature collages, or draw pictures of what they find outside.
For Tweens & Teens (Ages 12+):
- Mini Business Ventures: We love this one! Encourage a summer project such as pet-sitting, car washing, or learning how to build something online.
- Start a Podcast: Record casual chats about favourite films, hobbies, or even summer memories—phones and free apps do the trick! This really encourages children with their expression.
- Skill Swaps: Organise days where friends teach each other a skill—anything from guitar to code to new recipes.
- Portfolio Projects: Suggest making a digital collection of their art, photography, music, or writing to showcase talents (great for uni or job applications later!).
- Fitness Goals: Set a summer target for running, a sport, or group activities—track progress for a confidence boost.
- Volunteering: Local libraries, food banks, and community groups often welcome teen volunteers for projects or events.
Fun for all the family:
- Board Game Marathons: Choose a new game each day—strategy, maths, or language games all count!
- Mindful Moments: Try guided meditation or simple stretching after lunch for a calm reset.
- Digital Detox: Set a challenge to go phone-free for a day, replacing screen time with books, outdoor time, or crafts. This one is much needed even for us adults.
- Reading Roulette: Let each family member pick a book for the group, then host your own book club (with snacks!).
Simple, playful activities spark curiosity and confidence—and build real skills along the way.
Wishing you a bright, happy, and enriched summer! 🌞
